Early Sunday morning on September 21, 2025, there was an accident involving a crude oil tanker. The accident was near the intersection of Highway 6 and Consumers Road. Crude Oil spilled into the river and subsequently into the Carbon Canal.
The diversion was shut at about 4:30 am. The flood gate at Gordon Creek was opened a little later, and a boom was placed near the first bridge on Fairgrounds Road.
Carbon Canal has been in contact with Carbon County and a cleanup company with several crews. Progress is being made, although it is slow.
Carbon Canal has asked that all irrigators stop irrigating. We don’t have an estimated time frame for when the cleanup will be complete.
